Before we consider the Roles of Women in Religion today, we should look into the past. From St. Anthony Messenger, July 2011, we hear that "Jesus refuses to see women as inferior or unclean, and even makes them his disciples and reveals himself to them. His is a new model of how to treat women."

Judaism 101 describes the roles of women in traditional Jewish religion. The article states that women share equally with men in religion, often taking the lead in religious practices and rituals in the home. Learn about the mitzvots( commandments) especially for women and those from which women are exempt.

Pope John Paul II wrote several documents on the roles of women, notably his apostolic letter, Mulieris Dignitatem (The Dignity and Vocation of Women, August 15, 1988) and a shorter version, The Letter of John Paul II to Women (June 29, 1995).The pope applauds the many positive roles women have had throughout history. He speaks of the equality and complementarity of men and women and a distinction of roles (Letter to Women # 11).
